Careers Resources

Aims & objectives of the JHGS Careers programme

At JHGS our aim is to ensure that every student receives a comprehensive careers education to assist them to develop employability skills and knowledge of available pathways to enable them to make informed decisions following Year 11 or Year 13.

In January 2018 the Department for Education issued new Statutory Careers Guidance which outlined the eight Gatsby Benchmarks.  The Benchmarks are to be met in full by schools to ensure that a 'gold standard' of Career Education is provided to all students to equip them for their pathways after school.

The Benchmarks are as follows:

   Benchmark 1 - A stable career programme

Benchmark 2 - Learning from career and labour market information

Benchmark 3 - Addressing the needs of each student

Benchmark 4 - Linking curriculum learning to careers

Benchmark 5 - Encounters with employers and employees

Benchmark 6 - Experience of workplaces

Benchmark 7 - Encounters with further and higher education

   Benchmark 8 - Personal Guidance

John Hampden Grammar School is currently working towards achieving all Gatsby Benchmarks.

Overview of career provision

There is a structured programme of Careers lessons which are delivered during PSD sessions.  Students have access to careers software available via the school website and Google Classroom – Key Stage, Careers.

Students have the opportunity to engage with employers via school trips, enterprise activities, industry competitions, the I-PAC programme (Interview Preparation and Careers), attending careers fairs, careers presentations and work experience.

The school provides advice and guidance in respect of future opportunities covering Sixth Form Colleges, University applications, apprenticeships and employment opportunities.

Careers, education, apprenticeship and training opportunities received from local companies are publicised to students and their parents via the JHGS weekly bulletins.
