John Hampden Grammar School

Ethos & Values

JHGS was established in 1893 as the Schools of Science and Art to provide an outstanding education for young people by combining the best traditions and values of the past with the energy and ambition of the present. As impressive as the examination results are, the ethos, developed over many generations, is unique. It is based upon mutual respect, high expectations and support for one another as expressed in the School’s motto ‘Quit Ye Like Men’, which comes from 1 Corinthians and encourages us to act as men.

To achieve this we have a commitment to:

Excellence

  • in teaching and learning
  • in recognising and developing the talents and supporting the needs of each individual
  • in sporting, cultural and extra-curricular activities
  • in our expectations of each other
  • in our professional and personal integrity

Our Ethos

  • to “traditional” values of respect, courtesy, consideration and honesty
  • to providing a safe, secure, purposeful, happy and nuturing environment
  • to working together to fulfil our aims
  • to open leadership and management
  • to working with and for our community

Excitement

  • in inspirational lessons
  • in a broad, challenging and innovative curriculum
  • in an extensive and eclectic extra-curricular programme
  • in the range of opportunities for young men to lead
