Pastoral Care and Inclusion
We are proud of the pastoral care we provide to all our students – through daily time with their form tutors, talks and assemblies, support from their Head of Year and the wider Sixth Form team, access to a full-time school counsellor, and links to specialist services where needed.
Staff here are friendly and approachable, always willing to listen and help.

Four key messages we give to students at every opportunity:
1) Academic success is great, and working hard is important, but as long as you try your best, we ask nothing more. Your grades don’t define your worth, and whatever you achieve in tests, there are so many worthwhile and fulfilling paths you will be able to take in your life.
2) Far more important than grades is your character: being a kind, generous, decent, reliable person, a good friend, a young man of integrity and honesty, someone who can stick with it and bounce back when there are setbacks and things go wrong (as things often will).
3) Your health and wellbeing always come first: sleeping and eating well, maintaining a work-life balance, keeping your hobbies and interests alive, making quality time with friends and family – these are vital to success both personal and academic.
4) Talk to your family, and talk to us. Don’t bottle things up. Everyone feels nervous about exams and tests and deadlines – it shows you care. But if you find those feelings becoming excessive, affecting your sleep or other parts of your life, then come and chat to us.
We have a particular focus on disadvantaged students and those facing barriers to learning, including those in receipt of the 16 to 19 Bursary and/or Free School Meals, Young Carers, students with SEND, learners with English as an additional language, and those facing challenging home or personal circumstances.
JHGS is a Sixth Form where everyone is given the support they need to thrive, to belong, and to achieve their potential.
