Personal Development and Student Leadership

This is the real heart of what we are about in the JHGS Sixth Form. Because while qualifications matter, they don’t matter half so much as character and the right habits: integrity, self-discipline, diligence, hard work, community mindedness, a desire to give back and serve others.

This ethos of service is what sets us apart. Every sixth-form student does at least one hour’s service each week. That might be mentoring, leadership, running a society, helping younger students, volunteering in our partner primary schools, sports coaching, or being the face of the school at events.

And personal development has a formal curriculum here too, with lessons on key local and national issues including relationships, mental and physical health, the transition to young adulthood, the changing online world, responsible citizenship, and preparing to live independently.

Student leadership is woven into everything we do. We have a Head Boy Team of seven students responsible for different aspects of school life. And each of our six school Houses – Brunel, Carrington, Kelvin, Ramsay, Sheraton, Wren – is led by a sixth-form Head of House.
