THE JOHN HAMPDEN GRAMMAR SCHOOL FUND

What is the Development Fund?

The Development Fund was established as a separate charity in 1986 to raise much needed funds for capital development at the school and is a way for parents and alumni to ‘give back’ something to the school for their (and their children’s) excellent education and start in life.

Past Successes

The success of the many projects which have been completed over the years are borne out by the ultimate success of John Hampden Grammar School, its students past and present, and the increasing demand for places

Building projects in the last ten years, made possible with the generous support of parents and alumni have included the major sixth form extension and new learning resource centre (opened in 2013), science lab improvements (2015), main hall improvements (2015), art studio improvements (2016), corridor and staircase decoration (2017 and 2018) and in 2020 the refurbishment of the design and technology block and provision of two new science labs.

Since 2018, the fund has also supported the school to employ a full-time counsellor, in addition to the part-time provision that existed previously.

Future Plans

Construction of the new teaching block, our Innovation Hub, is now complete and a timelapse video of the construction is available via the news link on our front page.

The teaching block has been funded for the most part by a £3 million grant from the Department for Education, and the Department has also provided a £450,000 loan. This has covered the fabric and structure of the building.

The Maths department has moved in which means almost every student in the school has regular access to the new facilities. There are two new IT suites on the top floor which provide a modern working space for our Computing students. The Business, Economics and Psychology departments have also made this their new home.

A new quad has been formed between the Innovation Hub and the School Hall and Canteen.  This is paved and with the help of Parents and local business we have raised funds to make this a practical and relaxing outdoor space for students.

Our next fundraising project is likely to be the expansion of the canteen space.  Since the school has grown the canteen has not been able to easily accommodate the increased number of students coming through at lunchtimes.

Ways to Give & Forms

Regular Giving

This is the most popular way of making a gift, as it spreads the cost over a period of time. Whilst there is no minimum lifespan, we hope you will consider giving over a 7 year period. Payments are normally made by standing order monthly using the Gift Aid scheme. Giving in this way allows us to plan for future improvements in the certainty that the funding is available

One Off Gifts

By a single gift using the Gift Aid scheme. By making a single gift of an equivalent amount to a gift given over several years, it will reduce the school's need to borrow and therefore minimise any interest payments.

Payroll Giving

If you give through your payroll, your gift is made from your salary before it is taxed. So a monthly gift of £20 will cost you only £15.60 from your net pay.

A number of companies offer a "Matched Giving" scheme, through which they double, or sometimes more than double, any charitable donations made by their employees. Please check with your HR Department to see if your company operates any such scheme.

Legacy Pledges

Charitable legacies are donations made as part of your Will. By remembering John Hampden Grammar School in your Will, you can create a legacy of learning and help to contribute to the future success of the School.

Other Ways of Supporting Fundraising

  • Setting up and supporting appeal events
  • Organising separate events and activities
  • Encouraging other friends of the school to give.
