'Quit Ye Like Men' and 'Be More'
JHGS is an academic boys’ grammar school that’s both rooted in tradition and excited about the future. Our mission is to equip all students with what they need to be healthy, happy and high-achieving.
Our school motto – ‘Quit ye like men’ – may seem old-fashioned, but as wider society is questioning what it means to be a young man today, how to find a masculinity worth celebrating, we believe it’s more relevant than ever.
“Quit Ye Like Men”
The school’s motto, ‘Quit Ye Like Men” is adapted from 1 Corinthians 16: St Paul’s letter to early Christians who were being persecuted in the Roman city of Corinth. In the letter he encourages the community to be aware of their actions, to follow their principles, to be courageous and strong, and to act with love. The motto was chosen in the 1920's when the school’s focus was on helping rehabilitate soldiers from WW1. We believe that these principles are just as relevant and important in today’s world and all of our boys understand and embrace the school motto.
Students at JHGS fully understand what the school motto means. The principles and values contained in our school motto underpin all that we do. This is why our motto is just as relevant today.
"Be More"
For us, ‘Quit ye like men’ means a focus on character and values. We tell our students they should strive to Be More:
Be More Knowledgeable – curious about the world, following your interests, academically excited.
Be More Ambitious – working hard, aspiring to great things, aiming as high as you can.
Be More Independent – taking responsibility, willing to lead, always acting with integrity.
Be More Kind – treating others with respect, modelling empathy, striving to be a good friend.
Be More Involved – taking an active role, collaborating with others, having a strong sense of community.
Be More Resilient – overcoming challenges, showing courage and determination, never giving up.
