Extra Curricular opportunities

The curriculum experience at JHGS extends far beyond the timetable. We believe that education should be broad, enriching and full of opportunities for students to discover new interests, develop their talents and build skills and experiences beyond the classroom.

That ambition is reflected in exceptional levels of participation. Over 80% of the school community take part in at least one school-based extra-curricular activity. On average, each student engages with 3.8 different extra-curricular opportunities.

From sport, music and performance to academic societies, debating, coding, creative activities and student-led groups, opportunities run throughout the school day and extend into evenings, weekends and holidays. In 2025–26, 61.5% of students participated in wider-interest clubs and societies and more than 40% engaged in school sport, demonstrating the breadth of involvement across the school.

Together, these experiences encourage students to explore their interests, develop confidence and leadership, form new connections and pursue excellence beyond their academic studies.

Extra curricular Clubs and societies for the Autumn Term 2026

In addition to the wide range of sports clubs and squads, the following table highlights the range of options available to students from the start of the Autumn term that are available to join. Activities take place mostly within the school day, and group leaders will be able to advise students of any equipment or materials that may be needed as appropriate.

Group sizes may be limited by available resources and facilities. Year group availability reflects age appropriate and related activities.

Supporting Charities

Here at John Hampden we strive to #BeMore and this is embodied through the charity strand. Whether it is the independence granted to reach out to external organisations that we work with or the ambition and involvement of students and staff alike in planning and running events, the charity strand constantly looks to enhance the community ethos here.

Recent examples of students and teachers coming together include the live Taskmaster event (December 2024) which along with a bake sale raised over £2000 for Movember from our November fundraising. Special thanks to Max, Brendan and the rest of the AV team for the Taskmaster event and Ben and the rugby team for the cake sale. Img 1055

The extent of our outreach isn't confined to our own school as we have also collaborated with Wycombe High School - most notably with our stall at the Pink Fair - which combined with an inflatable fun run has contributed almost £1500 to Breast Cancer Awareness charities. Img 7706

Whilst those events have raised funds for national charities, we also look to support charities in the local area. We annually collect donations for the One Can Trust - a food bank that operates in High Wycombe - and this year our Christmas themed fundraising events have supported the Wycombe Homeless Connection which aims to support those most vulnerable during the winter months by providing a bed, water and food.

Our upcoming events include the second edition of both the staff karaoke and school Iftar as well as our first Staff darts match!

The continuing success of the charity events are a testament to a culmination of the community sense of the school and the ongoing support from the prefect team, Senior Leadership team and support staff. I would like to extend my appreciation to all those involved in charity events from planning to participation with particular thanks given to the invaluable help of Mrs Crouch.

On behalf of the JHGS Charity Team,
